<image:title>Hope - With hard work and dedication, you can heal yourself and be set free. Maybe you have been to countless therapists and endured hospitalizations, but you still have frequent thoughts of suicide or continue to engage in cutting behaviors, restrict calories, or binge and purge. Perhaps even getting treatment has been difficult and you’ve been turned away from therapists who don’t work with someone with your diagnosis. Only evidenced based practices for your specific issues are used at Peri Counseling. This means that the type of therapies that we use have been scientifically shown to improve lives. With the right support and by learning and using the right skills, you can get better.</image:title>

<image:title>Tools - Therapy at Peri Counseling often takes the form of a student/teacher relationship. Unlike other styles of therapy, you will learn specific actions to take in order to help yourself when you’re having a panic attack, feeling like you’re living “outside of your body”, dealing with overwhelming sadness, having urges to cut or induce vomiting, to restrict your calories, and to manage many other harmful behaviors. Both DBT and CBT often use easy to remember acronyms. Over-time, and with practice, these skills become like second nature. You can feel more in control and have an increased ability to feel comfortable being your true self.</image:title>

<image:title>Empowerment - is not beautiful. At Peri Counseling, we help women and teens realize that they don’t need to connect their value to their outward appearance or their accomplishments. In and of themselves, female attributes, such as intuition and sensitivity, should be valued and respected. The degradation of our sensitive nature can lead to a blocking out of our emotions by binging and purging, by starving ourselves, or by becoming extremely obsessed with eating whatever culture currently says is “healthy food”. On the contrary, we might allow ourselves to show our emotions in such a grand way that we hide our true selves behind them. Peri Counseling supports women and teens as they learn that our intuition is a gift that should be admired and not hidden. We will teach you to communicate freely, express your genuine self, and find your power.</image:title>

<image:title>Encourage Mindfulness - of DBT. The benefits of mindfulness are less stress, increased awareness, and a greater ability to manage emotions. If you have never sat down to a formal practice of meditation, you may feel silly when you first try. The good news is, the more you practice, the easier it becomes. We encourage everyone to practice at least 5 minutes everyday, as we do ourselves. Studies indicate improved thinking in people who have done mindfulness everyday for just 8 weeks. We don't practice mindfulness to get good at mindfulness, we practice mindfulness to get good at life.</image:title>

<image:title>The Story - Rumi was a 13th Century Persian poet and the son of a renowned Sufi scholar. Sufism is a branch of Islam primarily concerned with developing spirituality, or more precisely the inner character. Radical openness, a crucial skill in learning to change, can trace its' roots to 9th century Malamati Sufism. The Malamatis believe that one cannot become self aware without companionship, and that sustained self-observation and healthy self-criticism should also be practiced. The Malamatis look to find fault within themselves and question their self-centeredness. The help of other people is needed to point out the blind spots created by our innate perceptions. The counseling process of Radically Open-Dialectical Behavior Therapy is rooted in Sufism.</image:title>

<image:title>The Story - In Persian mythology, Peri are exquisite winged like creatures who are not quite angels, and not quite evil spirits. They are sometimes referred to as fairies or spirits and are revered as beautiful and kind creatures even though they live between chaotic good and chaotic evil. Some literature implies that “the Peri” represent the soul.</image:title>
<image:caption>Ebrahim Soufiani interprets the poem by Rumi in his book The Lost Key, An Exploration into Persian Literature, as meaning that the Peri live in the soul of humanity and are why we have thoughts, illusions, images, and dreams. Illustrations of the Peri almost always include a fountain as representative of the essence of life. Peri are the expression of the gentility, originality, or purity of humanity. They are our spirit.</image:caption>

<image:title>Stability - binging and purging, frequently getting into arguments, and/or having different people come into and out of your life on a regular basis. Instability may be that you are struggling to find an understanding of yourself and where you fit in the world. Peri Counseling can provide support as you explore your core beliefs, work to let go of the negative ones, and learn to fully accept and love yourself. Webster defines stability as the strength to stand and endure. Only when we find our true selves, are we able to withstand all the many difficult challenges of life.</image:title>
